Dr. Roberta Gardner

Roberta Price Gardner is a clinical assistant professor of literacy education in the Department of Early Childhood and Elementary Education at Georgia State University. She teaches courses in reading and writing methods.  She enjoys engaging teachers and students in literature-based reading and writing explorations that connect them to the power and possibilities of reading and writing. Her literature based research focuses on high-needs communities of color, identity, and critical perspectives on children’s and young adult literature. She is a Red Clay Writing Project Fellow, and the founder of the Ezra Jack Keats Bookmaking Competition in Atlanta, which provides the opportunity for children in Atlanta Public Schools to write stories and experience the art and craft of bookmaking.

Ms. Rachel Gilmore

Rachel Gilmore is a third grade teacher at Usher Collier Heights Elementary for the Atlanta Public Schools District. She completed her undergraduate studies at the University of Georgia and recently earned a Masters in Early Childhood Education from the University of West Georgia. Rachel’s love of reading and writing was nurtured through her mother at a young age where she was encouraged to be knowledgeable, expressive, and creative through words. She is passionate in giving all students opportunity and power through voice. “Writing helps students connect with the world around them, both on and off the page.” Rachel actively develops, evaluates, and disseminates culturally relevant literacy practices through her work in Professional Dyads and Culturally Relevant Teaching (PDCRT), a subgroup of the National Council of Teachers of English. When not teaching, she enjoys swimming, traveling, and spending time with family and friends.
